Save the Odeon campaign gathers momentum

Save the Odeon campaignersThe campaign to re-open our classic Art Deco Odeon is gaining momentum. Everyone misses the Odeon, from youngsters who could enjoy the latest blockbuster in a safe and secure environment, to older people who valued the daytime screenings.

Comparisons are often made between Chester and York. We not only share a great Roman heritage but both cities have seen the doors closed on their Odeons.

However, 13,000 people backed the Save the Odeon campaign in York and the good news is the cinema has been acquired by an independent cinema chain and will re-open as a five screen picture house this month.

Last week the Odeon Action Group in Chester had a constructive meeting with representatives of the City Council, which is a key player as any change of use or sub-division of the Odeon building would require planning permission and listed building consent from the local authority.

At the meeting we highlighted a recent UK Film Council study that has demonstrated how local cinemas have a positive impact on the social, cultural and economic lives of local communities.

We are planning to hold a public meeting in September where everyone can come along to lend their support to the campaign.
