Labour County Councillors helping both the old and the young

Yellow bullet Changing needs

Brendan Doyle - County Councillor for Blacon County DivisionLabour councillors continue to highlight the changing needs of our ageing population. The resource implications are immense, ranging from increased specialist support and more concessionary fares for travel to more respite care and medical support.

County Councillors Brendan Doyle and Derek Bateman have called on Cheshire County Council to draw up a strategy to meet the increased demands.

Yellow bullet Backing the Children's Fund

Labour County Councillors Peter Nurse and Pat Merrick tabled a motion to council welcoming the government's success in operating a children's fund. This has supported young people with disabilities, young people who have suffered abuse, young carers and children in families that are homeless.

It has also helped work with children who have suffered bullying or been the victims of crime. In total £8.8m has been invested in Cheshire to carry out this work benefiting at least a 1000 children in need. Government funding was designed to initiate these schemes but it is now time for the local community to back them.

"If we cannot raise £1 million a year working with our partner organisations then Cheshire is in a very sorry state," declared Pat Merrick.  "A rich county like ours can surely sustain such worthwhile projects."

Do you have any experience of what it's like to be getting older in Cheshire?  Do you care for an elderly person or are you elderly yourself?  What's your experience of support services?

Have you been bullied or do you know anyone who has?
